Ciao winter, time for a swim (and a tinny)

NO ZU’s self-described “art-damaged sound” fuses the flavour of no-wave, boogie, dub, disco and salsa manifest into the band’s very own ‘heat beat’. To herald the change in season (and in preparation for the hot, hot El Niño summer), Andrew Noble, NO ZU’s drummer and percussionist, has put together this sultry mix for your listening pleasure.

Formed in 2007 by founding member Nicolaas Oogjes, NO ZU has evolved into an eight-piece percussive funk experiment and live big band (previous EARS mixer DJ Susan is included in the line up). Featuring otherworldly vocals, wild horns, housey-synths, suggestive bass-lines and Latin percussion, NO ZU is a centrifugal force in Melbourne’s internationally recognised underground dance scene. Proudly antipodean in outlook and feeling (hence the tinny of the title), yet thoroughly global in influence, every NO ZU live experience – whether at a local/international music festival or a smokey basement club – threatens to erupt into a no-holds-barred dance party in which the distinction between performer and audience disappears within the infectious heat beat. Signed to Chapter Music, NO ZO will release their sophomore album Afterlife on vinyl and digital in early 2016. To get you in the mood in the meantime, feast your eyes and ears on their latest single, ‘Ui Yia Yia‘– we couldn’t resist its body-building sleaze. Oh, and put on your budgie smugglers or boardies while you tune into this sultry summer mix for AP.

You can be part of the next NO ZU dancetaria at At First Site on 14 November at Carriageworks.
