Much like the industrial and gritty metropolis that is its namesake, this mix – created especially for us by DJ Seoul – is serious, deep, dark and transportive. It’s a collection of moody and hypnotic beats making reference to minimal wave, industrial, dance and balearic, with tracks by local hero Tornado Wallace, italo synth pop band East Wall and some Bowie thrown in for good measure.
Yahna Fookes (aka DJ Seoul) is one half of Sydney collective Lady Shave (along with Alysha Fleiter, the formidable DJ Nite Fleit). Lady Shave is a hypnotic and mindless dance night dedicated to lady-only DJs, dark melodies (especially new beat), and sensory decor. They recently presented their third party at Freda’s in Chippendale, and this mix is reminiscent of the summer edition.
As well as making mixes, Yahna is a contemporary dancer and choreographer and is the creator of last year’s site-specific work Suspended, which was performed on the Rooftop at Melbourne’s Curtin House. Since moving to Sydney, Yahna has become a converted green smoothie enthusiast, and just last week created a dance piece for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, collaborating with women’s swimwear label NLP and LA sound designer Suzanne Kraft.
