Artist, musician & die-hard Carpenters fan Darren Sylvester put together this soundtrack for your summer of road trips, nostalgia for the year past and toasts to the future. A man of many hats, talents & leather jackets, Darren is a celebrated artist with a “part-time rockstar” career. Here, he takes us on a tropical journey, from Suntory pop jingles to Ryuichi Sakamoto. By day, Darren Sylvester is a celebrated artist whose work across photography, sculpture, video and performance explores pop narratives, mortality, pathos and ennui with wry humour and high-gloss perfectionism. By night, you may find him playing a packed out pub, layering synthesizers, drum machine beats and vocal tracks in an accidental “part-time rockstar” career, which came about after writing, recording and producing a limited-press vinyl for an exhibition of his work (the album was a hit!). Earlier this year, Darren published his first book Compass Point, a kaleidoscopic photo-pilgrimage to the famed (and now closed) Bahama recording studio of Grace Jones and Talking Heads (amongst other musical titans). Darren is represented by Sullivan and Strumpf, Sydney and is currently furiously mixing his second album, due for release in 2013. In the meantime, he shares tracks from some of his favourite LPs and artists to sound in the new year.
