In the weeks following 9/11, five unrelated young women presented to emergency rooms in New York complaining of the same problem – they were unable to swallow, believing that debris was lodged in their throats. No obstructions were found inside their bodies.
Through The Howling Girls, composer Damien Ricketson and director Adena Jacobs, with the Sydney Chamber Opera, explore the impact of mass hysteria has on a society. They also examine the voice; how it can be lost, and what it’s like to reconstitute such a thing.
The Howling Girls uses advanced electro-acoustic sound techniques to place the listener in a ‘cocoon of resonance’, creating a highly immersive, unforgettable experience.
