Over the past four years, Arts House has brought together artists and emergency workers to work together on the climate crisis. As extreme weather continues to amplify, the impacts become more complex. Refuge is a platform for artists to motivate and influence future planning for emergency situations and climate crisis. It brings the local community together, so we can be more prepared, more resilient, and learn from each other.

This year’s iteration of Refuge looks at displacement of people, a genuine humanitarian issue that climate is now making worse. An increasing number of people are relocating from vulnerable places to more secure areas, attempting to rebuild their lives. The program will combine art performances with discussions and conversations, including the North Melbourne School of Displacement, Jen Rae’s Portage, and In Case of… RediPlan Workshop, a collaboration between artist Kate Sulan and the Australian Red Cross. Lorna Hannan, local resident of North Melbourne for more than 50 years, will create a space to share a cuppa and a conversation in Ruth Crow Corner.
