Open House Melbourne fosters public appreciation for architecture and public engagement in conversations about the future of our cities. Doors are opened to some of Melbourne’s most fascinating buildings, offering an opportunity to reflect on the role of design in the evolution of our city. This year, Open House Melbourne goes regional: 27 buildings plus walking tours, film screenings and talks in central Bendigo, Eaglehawk and Castlemaine.

Our top picks:

Minor’s Cottage
This project demonstrates how, if we are willing to take a long-term view in our approach to housing, what may seem out of reach (for financial or other reasons) can be achieved through clever design and planning. Located close to Bendigo central, the renovated property acknowledges the importance of Miners’ cottages to Bendigo’s urban fabric. More info here.

Australia Modern Talk
Professor Hannah Lewi, an architectural historian at the Melbourne School of Design, discusses the book Australia Modern: Architecture, Landscape & Design. Hannah will discuss the genesis of the book and exhibition, exploring the histories and anecdotes associated with some of Australia’s most iconic modernist buildings, interiors and landscapes.
