On the centenary of his birth, Nelson Mandela’s life will be commemorated in Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum until 3 March 2019.
The exhibition follows Mandela’s life chronologically, starting with his childhood in the Transkei region of South Africa where he attended a mission school. It then follows him to Johannesburg where his experiences under apartheid led him to take on the role of leader in the African National Congress, and his subsequent imprisonment. It finishes by exploring his life and leadership in post-apartheid South Africa.
A collection of rare personal artefacts, film footage and documents combined with newly-created audio visual pieces offer an insight into Mandela’s life. This is the first time many of the items have been on display outside of South Africa.
