The Venice Architecture Biennale will celebrate new ways of thinking and seeing the world this year through the title Freespace, selected by curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. Running from the 26th May – 25th November, 71 participants will explore buildings and proposals that are examples of ‘generosity and thoughtfulness’ in architecture throughout the world.

Freespace can be a space for opportunity, a democratic space, un-programmed and free for uses not yet conceived,” according to Farrell and McNamara. “There is an exchange between people and buildings that happens, even if not intended or designed, so buildings themselves find ways of sharing and engaging with people over time, long after the architect has left the scene. Architecture has an active as well as a passive life.”

The Australian pavilion, titled Repair, will be presented by Mauro Baracco and Louise Wright of Baracco+Wright Architects, in collaboration with artist Linda Tegg. The pavilion will look at architecture that that works with natural systems to repair the environment. It is also exciting to see six countries exhibiting for the first time, including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
