SFMoma is celebrating Susan Meiselas’ incredible photographic career in a retrospective exhibition, ‘Susan Meiselas: Mediations’. Meiselas’ work spans the personal and the geopolitical: Meiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976, and has covered issues ranging from war to human rights, cultural identity and domestic violence. Her documentation of Nicaragua’s Sandinista revolution, and American carnival strippers are two of her most well-known projects.
The retrospective has been curated to focus on the ideas explored in Meiselas’ photographs, as much as her unique working method itself. For example, one section, “On the Frontline”, is about the process of being a documentary photographer. The exhibition runs from 21 July – 21 October 2018.
